Passenger Rights in International Transport

Was your train delayed? Was it cancelled? Did you miss a connection? There are new rights for you here...

Práva cestujících v mezinárodní přepravěIn the sense of Regulation (EC) No. 1371/2007 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 23 October 2007 on rail passengers’ rights and obligations and the General Conditions of Carriage for Rail Passengers (GCC-CIV/PRR) rail carriers must compensate railway passengers in EU countries, in Norway and in Switzerland for delays of 60 minutes and longer, or 120 minutes and longer, except for specified cases.

What kind of compensation will you receive?

  • 25 % off the price of an international ticket, provided the total price of the fare for the journey in one direction for one passenger is at least EUR 16 for delays of 60 minutes and longer.
  • 50 % off the price of an international ticket, provided the total price of the fare for the journey in one direction for one passenger is at least EUR 8 for delays of 120 minutes and longer.
  • For network travel documents (RPT) special terms and conditions apply.

How to Claim Compensation

  • step 1 - Fill in a request form (you can obtain one at the ticket counter or you can print it out from this page) and enclose the originals of the valid and stamped travel document and reservation.
    Request for Compensation (29 kB)
  • step 2 - If you don’t have a reservation, find out whether train personnel or a service agent at the ticket counter can issue you a confirmation of the delay. In the event that they can, please have the relevant field filled in on the request form.
  • step 3 - Submit the request form within two months from completing your journey at the railway from which you purchased your travel document. You can find the addresses of the individual railway carriers’ refund offices on this page. After examining your claim to compensation for reasons of a delay, the carrier will issue you a credit note which you can use to purchase inland or international travel and reservation documents at most ČD ticket counters. For compensation in a different form you must make a separate request.

Non-functional heating or air conditioning

In international transport, passengers have a right to compensation in the form of a credit note in the amount of 25% of the price of the fare and reservation if in a sleeper or couchette carriage included according to plan a comfortable temperature was not maintained (non-functional air-conditioning or heating) and the passenger could not be relocated to a seat of the same or higher category in a different carriage of the same train with functional ventilation, functional air-conditioning or heating.
