Poland lies in central Europe and is our northern neighbour. Poland truly has a lot to offer to tourists – historic cities, technical monuments, undisturbed nature and even the sea. Poland is very close, so why not take a trip there?
Kraków
Poland’s most famous historic city, lying in the south of the country. The metropolis of the Lesser Poland Voivodeship abounds in valuable historic monuments from many epochs and in 1978 the old town was added to the UNESCO list. You can visit the Wawel Cathedral, the Royal Castle or synagogues in the former Jewish quarter of Kazimierz. Not far from the city is the Wieliczka salt mine.
Warsaw (Warszawa)
The Polish metropolis, centre of the Masovian Voivodeship. The old town dating from the 13th century, which was destroyed during the Second World War, has been renovated in great detail and was added to the UNESCO list in 1980. A dominant feature and also the city’s tallest building is the Palace of Culture, dating from 1955.
Wrocław
The historic capital city of Silesia founded by the Czech prince Vratislaus lies on the Oder River and boasts gothic, baroque and secessionist buildings. The core of the old town is its extensive square (Rynek), one of the largest medieval squares in Europe. The Oder, which splits and flows around numerous islands, is spanned by more than 100 bridges.
Malbork
One of the largest medieval castles in Europe located in the north of Poland, the largest brick structure in Europe. In 1997 it was added to the UNESCO list.
The Masurian Lake District
This region of north-eastern Poland with more than a thousand lakes is sought after by those longing for tranquillity and undisturbed nature. There is something here for fishermen, cyclists, hikers and boating enthusiasts. The main entry point to the region is the city of Olsztyn.
Białowieża National Park
This park straddles the border between Poland and Belarus. It is said to be the last true primeval forest in Europe, untouched by human activity for several hundred years. The forest was added to the UNESCO list in 1979. The park symbol is the wisent, or European bison, whose herds you can see roaming freely here with a little luck. By train you can reach the Hajnówka railway station, from where you can continue by bus to the town of Białowieża.
