Romania lies in south-eastern Europe, mostly on the Balkan Peninsula and its terrain is quite varied. Not only can you visit the mountainous interior, which spans the arch of the Carpathians, but also the protected Danube Delta and the Black Sea coast. There are also numerous monuments, of which the best-known is probably “Dracula’s Castle”, Bran. Take a trip to mysterious Romania…
Mountains
Romania can be called the kingdom of the Carpathians. Those who enjoy demanding multi-day mountain hikes will be in their element here, as will those in search of endless grassy plains where each day they will meet only a few shepherds tending their herds of sheep. The most extensive and highest mountain range is Făgăraş, and the Apuseni offer great beauty as well. Bare ridges and beautiful views are plentiful in the mountains of Maramureş.
Monuments
Bran, allegedly “Dracula’s Castle”, lies in Transylvania not far from the city of Brașov. The “Secret Castle in the Carpathians” – Castelul Corvineştilor (Hunyad Castle) – is located in the city of Hunedoara. You can get here by train too...
Cities
Romanian cities abound in monuments. We can recommend the capital Bucharest as well as the venerable cities of Sibiu, Braşov and Sighişoara.
It is currently possible to travel to Romania without transferring only in the summer season, using direct sleeper and couchette carriages on train EN 476/477 bound for Burgas and Varna in Bulgaria. The carriages run from mid-June until the beginning of September and depart Prague every Tuesday, Friday and Saturday at 0:05. You can use them to travel to the Romanian cities of Curtici and Giurgiu, through which the train passes in the afternoon hours of the first day and in the early morning hours of the second day, respectively. On the return journey, the carriages depart on Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday. For travel to the capital Bucharest or for travel outside the summer season, it is best to use a connection with a transfer in Budapest.
