Slovenia is a European country straddling the border of central Europe and the Balkans. It borders on Italy, Austria, Hungary and Croatia. It has access to the Adriatic Sea through the Gulf of Trieste, where e.g. the port of Koper is located. As a former part of the Austrian Monarchy, Slovenia has much in common with the Czech Republic, which is just one of many reasons to visit.

When visiting Slovenia don’t miss the capital Ljubljana with its quarter-million inhabitants. Here you can visit Ljubljana Castle, a dominant feature of the city, or take a walk through the streets of the historic centre. Especially in the newer districts one can find buildings (e.g. the National and University Library) designed by local architect Jože Plečnik, who also designed buildings in Prague. The rest of Slovenia’s territory is worth visiting as well, where you can find seaside resorts, thermal springs and mountain rivers suitable for extreme sports. Another favourite destination is Triglav, the country’s highest mountain.

In the 2011/2012 timetable there are no direct train connections available to Slovenia. The best way to travel to Ljubljana from Prague is on a connection with transfers in Linz and Salzburg, for which you can purchase the affordable SporoTiket Slovenia ticket using ČD’s online shop. Train R 201 Anton Bruckner departs Prague’s Main Station (Praha hl.n.) at 7:16 in the morning, and after two transfers in Austria you will arrive in Ljubljana aboard direct carriages on train EC 1113/1213 at 18:31. The journey thus takes just over 11 hours. On the return journey it is possible to use a parallel connection departing from Ljubljana at 9:12 aboard train EC 1212/1112 with transfers in Salzburg and Linz with arrival in Prague at 20:40. It is also possible to travel to Slovenia via Vienna.
