Serbia is an inland country on the Balkan Peninsula. It borders on Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Macedonia and Kosovo. Like other parts of south-eastern Europe, Byzantine and European influences blend here. Due to the direct train connection with Prague, it is an ideal destination as well as a transfer point for further travel in the Balkans.

With its more than one million residents, Belgrade lies on the confluence of the Danube and Sava Rivers on sites where there has been human settlement for 7,000 years. The city is deserving of attention for its monuments (Kalemegdan Fortress, St. Mark’s Church, the Cathedral of Saint Sava), as well as its modern architecture (e.g. the National Bank). Those interested in engineering can also visit the railway museum on the main boulevard near Belgrade Station.

Among the many interesting sights outside the capital are e.g. the Kazan Gorge on the Danube at the Romanian border, a deep canyon more than 100 km in length. In the 1970s, he Iron Gate dam was built to produce hydroelectric power, one of the largest in the world at the time. The gorge’s surroundings were declared a national park.

The best connection for a trip to Serbia is direct train EC 270/271 Avala. This train departs Prague every day at 5:42 and arrives in Belgrade at 20:48. The return train departs Belgrade at 6:48 and arrives in Prague at 22:18. The train thus covers the distance between the two cities in roughly 15 hours.
