Ukraine lies on the western edge of eastern Europe and is the second-largest country in Europe by area. It borders on Slovakia, Poland, Belarus, Russia, Romania, Moldova and Hungary. Ukraine is mostly a flat country, although its significant mountain ranges include the Carpathians and the Crimean Mountains. Ukraine has access to the sea through the Black Sea coast.
Among the most interesting places in Ukraine are certainly Kiev, the capital city on the Dnieper River with its almost 3 million residents. The city offers many historic buildings, e.g. the St. Andrew’s Church, and the St. Sophia Cathedral. Like in other eastern European cities, you can find monumental structures of the Soviet era, especially on Kiev’s main boulevard, Khreshchatyk.
If you prefer swimming to walking in the city and viewing monuments, you can visit the tourist resorts of Odessa or Sevastopol. If you don’t wish to travel to the interior and you’re interested in taking a look just over the border to what was once Czechoslovak territory, try visiting the city of Uzhhorod and its surroundings.
In the 2011/2012 timetable there are no direct train connections available to Ukraine. The easiest way to travel to the capital Kiev, for example, is via Warsaw or via Košice, Čierna nad Tisou and Chop. Using the second variant, it is possible to depart Prague at 0:12 on fast train R 441, and after three transfers you will reach your destination at 9:25 on the second day. It is possible to travel the same route in the opposite direction, departing Kiev at 11:27 and arriving in Prague at 16:50 on the second day.
