Belarus is an eastern European country bordering on Poland, Ukraine, Russia and the Baltic states. It gained its independence in 1991. Despite the fact that it is not a renowned tourist destination, it can offer visitors many interesting places – the capital Minsk, the historic city of Hrodna, the border city of Brest and the Belarusian side of the Białowieża Forest straddling the border with Poland.

Minsk

It is definitely worth visiting the capital Minsk with its two million inhabitants. Its history dates from the 11th century. Because it was largely destroyed during the Second World War, however, it offers mainly interesting post-war structures and long boulevards (“prospekty”). You can get to Minsk comfortably from the Czech Republic via direct train in sleeper carriages.

Brest, Grodno

Using the direct train from Prague and other cities in the Czech Republic it is also possible to travel to the city of Brest on the Polish border, where you can visit the Brest Fortress or the railway museum. Among the gems of Belarus is the city of Hrodna in the west of the country which – in contrast to the capital – has preserved its historic form. You can get here on a direct train from Minsk and visit e.g. the Old Castle, the New Castle and the Fire Tower.
