The Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague, an oasis of applied arts and design in the city center, is located in a
Neo-Renaissance building near Palach Square. The Neo-Renaissance building holds three floors of precious objects
from antiquity to the present day, which can be seen in the permanent exhibition as well as in short-term thematic
exhibitions. The most interesting exhibit, a demonstration of period architecture and artistic crafts, is the
building itself, completed in 1901. The architect Josef Schulz, also the author of the Rudolfinum and the National
Museum buildings, designed not only this monumental structure on a narrow and long plot of land but also its
decoration and furnishings, including period exhibition showcases and furniture for the depository and library. Most
of Schulz's furnishings can still be seen; his exhibition furniture is part of the new permanent exhibition.
The museum manages collections of glass, porcelain, and ceramics, applied graphics and photography, textiles, fashion
and design, furniture, clocks, as well as a collection of precious and base metals, rare materials, jewelry, toys,
and a large amount of written and visual documentation. The most interesting and precious exhibits can be seen in
the seven halls of the permanent exhibition and at short-term thematic exhibitions. The museum also includes the
largest public library that collects books on art and design. The museum also includes an adjacent garden, which is
an oasis of calm in the very center of the city, a museum shop, and a pleasant restaurant.
In its branches, the museum exhibits its large collection of Cubist furniture (in the House of the Black Madonna in
Prague), a collection of toys (in the chateau of Kamenice nad Lipou near Jindřichův Hradec), and organizes
short-term photographic exhibitions (in the Josef Sudek Gallery in Prague's Hradčany).
